PRAGUE (ICIS)--Bayer Material Science will in the future consider constructing a polycarbonate (PC) plant with no attached bisphenol-A (BPA) production, said Jens Kaatze, global product manager for polycarbonates on Wednesday.

Speaking at the 8th ICIS Phenol and Acetone conference in Prague, Kaatze stated that 200,000 tonnes of additional PC production would be needed globally to cope with increases in demand.

Kaatze clarified that Bayer do produce BPA but prefer to use as much as possible internally for PC production. He pointed to length in the global BPA market. In fact he even suggested the possibility of a future PC plant which purchases BPA externally.

“Will we build a PC unit without BPA? It’s always [discussed] when we build a new plant. So far [we] haven’t done, but it's not a dogma in the company. BPA is a product we can easily transport,” said Kaatze.
