LONDON (ICIS)--The number of new cars registered in Germany in June fell 1.9% year over year to 277,614, a German government agency said on Thursday.

Compared with May, registrations were up 1.0%.

For the first six months from January to June, registrations were up 2.4% year over year to 1,538,268, Flensburg-based Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) said. Gasoline-driven cars accounted for 50.4% and diesel-driven cars for 48.0% of registrations.

Germany’s Volkswagen remained the market leader with a share of 21.0% of new-car registrations in the first six months, followed by Mercedes with 8.9%. The largest non-German brand was General Motor’s Opel affiliate with a share of 7.3%.

New-car sales are an important market indicator for many chemical products and polymers, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), nylon, as well as styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) for tyre production.
