Europe May chlorine output down against April, up year on year

LONDON (ICIS)--Average daily European chlorine production in May was 1.0% below the previous month ,but 2.4% higher than the same period a year ago, industry body EuroChlor said on Tuesday.

In May 2014, average daily chlorine volumes stood at 26,555 tonnes, down from 26,825 tonnes in April 2014, but up from 25,929 tonnes in May 2013. In May 2014, total European chlorine production reached 823,201 tonnes.

There was a similar trend in May 2014 for caustic soda stocks month on month and year on year. In May 2014, caustic soda volumes were 279,330 tonnes, 1.7% lower when compared with the previous month when stocks stood at 284,036 tonnes. However in May 2013, volumes were 12,631 tonnes higher.

Chlorine capacity utilisation in the EU-28 countries plus Norway and Switzerland slipped slightly in May 2014 to 77.9% when compared with the previous month which was at 78.7%. However, chlorine capacity utilisation was up from 74.8% in May 2013.
