HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports of polypropylene (PP) for May were up by 19% from the same month in 2013, according to data made available this week by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

US PP imports rose to 9,554 tonnes in May 2014 from 8,010 tonnes in 2013.

Mexico, Canada and Korea sent the most PP into the US, together representing 54% of imports. Volumes from Mexico increased by 10%, while volumes from Canada and Korea declined.

US PP exports fell by 11% in May to 85,271 tonnes, down from 95,787 tonnes in 2013.

Mexico, Canada and Vietnam were the top destinations for US exports, together representing 85% of exports. Exports to Mexico decreased, while exports to Canada and Vietnam increased.

The increase in imports and decrease in exports is likely related to higher prices in the US, with May contracts in 2014 around 9 cents/lb higher than the same month in 2013.

Major North American PP producers include LyondellBasell, ExxonMobil, INEOS, Total, Formosa, Braskem Americas, Pinnacle Polymers, Phillips 66 and Flint Hills Resources.
