HOUSTON (ICIS)--US May methanol imports increased by 22% year on year, with about a third of the gain coming from Malaysia, according to data from the US International Trade Commission this week.

The Asian shipments, representing 54% of US imports during the month, were the main driver in bringing down US methanol spot barge prices to near a three-year low.

Shipments from Trinidad - which represented 68% of US imports during the month - and from Bahrain accounted for the rest of the import gain.

Major US methanol suppliers include Methanex, LyondellBasell, OCI and Southern Chemical (SCC).
