Japan's production of 6 primary chemicals rises in June

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s production of six primary chemicals out of 18 increased year on year in June due to operating factors, the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPCA) said in a statement on Friday.

Output of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), methyl methacryl (MMA) monomer, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), toluene and acrylonitrile (ACN) was higher than the same period a year earlier, according to official data from the JPCA.

Among these chemicals, production of HDPE rose by 7% year on year to 67,900 tonnes, while output of MMA monomer increased by 25% to 39,400 tonnes, the data showed.

Production of toluene was up by 27% to 154,600 tonnes from the year-before period, while output of PS stood at 48,100 tonnes, a 7% increase, based on the data.

However, the country’s production of 12 chemicals including ethylene, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), benzene and xylene declined in June from the corresponding period a year earlier, JPCA said.

Of these chemicals, output of ethylene fell by 6.9% year on year to 483,300 tonnes, despite the increase in the average operating rate of Japan’s naphtha crackers, which stood at 93% in June, up from 85.6% a year earlier, based on the data.

Three naphtha crackers were shut for scheduled maintenance in June, while two other crackers were undergoing turnaround in June 2013, according to the JPCA.

Production of LDPE decreased by 15% to 102,800 tonnes from a year earlier, while output of PP fell by 24% to 124,700 tonnes, based on the statistics.
