China’s imports of most petrochemicals up year on year in June

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s imports of most petrochemicals indicated a year-on-year (YoY) increase in June, with significant rise in volumes of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), butyl acrylate (butyl-A) and benzene, official data showed on Thursday.

The country’s intakes of MEK soared to 163 tonnes year on year in June, while that of butyl-A surged to 5,133 tonnes during the same period, data from China Customs showed.

The hike in butyl-A imports was mainly attributed to the concentrated arrivals of the previous contracted cargoes, but the acrylate ester market has been weak recently due to poor demand, a acrylate ester industry source said.

Meanwhile, benzene imports rose to 32,745 tonnes in June on a year-on-year basis, but dropped by 6% month on month (MoM), the data showed.

Domestic benzene downstream buyers increased their purchases on concerns of short supply in the near future, amid an optimistic outlook, as imported prices were on an uptrend in May and June, a source from the benzene market said.

However, imports of some petrochemical products dropped year on year in June, including n-butanol (NBA), dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and caprolactam (capro), according to the data.

China’s imports of NBA in June fell by 89% to 5,445 tonnes year on year, DOP shrank by 82% to 895 tonnes, while capro volumes fell by 71% to 8,820 tonnes, the data showed.
