SINGAPORE (ICIS)--MEGlobal has brought forward the shutdown of its 350,000 tonne/year monoethylene glycol (MEG) unit at Prentiss in Canada from September amid a shortage of feedstock ethylene, a company source said on Thursday.

The plant was taken off line early this month and will remain down for 35 days, the source said, without elaborating on the cause of the ethylene shortage.

Because of the shutdown, MEGlobal will purchase MEG cargoes from the spot market to fulfill its contract obligations to customers in China, the source said.

MEGlobal is a joint venture between US producer Dow Chemical and Kuwait’s Petrochemical Industries Co (PIC).
