SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan's Taiyo Oil is underway to ramp up the benzene production at Shikoku to 100% on 7-8 September, a company source said.

The total benzene production at the site is at 300,000 tonnes/year before the hydrodealkylation (HDA) unit was revamped to a transalkylation unit (TAU), the source said.

Previously, Taiyo Oil could produce a total of 450,000 tonnes/year of benzene, including the benzene yield from the reformer.

The TAU was started up alongside the restart of the heating furnace of the benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) naphtha hydrotreating unit over the last week, the source said.

The delayed restart of the heating furnace was due to a fire erupted at the refinery on 20 August, it added.

The refinery was slated to restart in mid-August after shutting down for planned maintenance in early June, the source said.
