HOUSTON (ICIS)--BP is continuing to operate its refinery at Whiting, Indiana despite an accident that occurred late US-time on Wednesday 27 August, the energy and petrochemicals major said on Thursday.

BP said that operations at the 413,000 bbl/day refinery "were minimally impacted as a result of the incident and the refinery continues to produce products for customers."

BP said that a fire broke out at a process unit at the northern end of the refinery site at around 21:00 local Indiana time but was extinguished two hours later. It did not say which unit was affected.

One employee was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but later released, a spokesperson said.

The Whiting refinery processes large volumes of heavy oil sands-based crude from Canada.
