Clarification: Giant 1.1GW Dutch coal power plant delayed until late February

The below story, published at 05:30 London time on 22 January 2015, originally referred to a remit notification, accessible at the time of writing on the ENTO-E transparency platform, which said the Maasvlakte 3 unit was scheduled to provide power to the Dutch grid from Saturday [24 January]. However, ICIS would like to clarify that a more recent note had by that time been published on the EEX transparency platform, which Maasvlakte plant operator E.ON uses to notify the market of its Dutch power plant availability, stating that the plant would be available to the grid from 24 February. An updated article follows.

The giant 1,070MW coal-fired Maasvlakte 3 power plant in the Netherlands will not be commercially available to the grid until the second half of February, project manager Ab Harpe confirmed to ICIS on Wednesday.

This follows news that the 777MW Eemscentrale A coal plant, expected on line by the end of January, could also be facing delays because of the number of tests that need to be passed (see EDEM 21 January 2015).

If the availability of both plants had already been priced into the Dutch near curve for February, this latest setback will bolster the bullish sentiment already introduced by the possibility of delays to Eemscentrale A.

This means gains on the February ’15 Baseload could be seen, particularly since the contract was sold off in recent sessions, with trade data showing it changed hands at prices nearing record lows on Tuesday morning.

Once operational, MPP3 will have the capacity to provide 9.5% of the Netherlands’ electricity demand, according to latest rolling annual consumption figures released by transmission system operator TenneT.

The plant has faced repeated delays since its construction began, with its initial target commissioning date way back in the first half of 2012 (see EDEM 23 June 2014).
