Saudi Arabia’s Sipchem starts up new Jubail PBT plant

Photo courtesy of SIPCHEMSINGAPORE (ICIS)–Saudi International Petrochemical Co (Sipchem) started up its new 63,000 tonne/year polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) plant in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, on 20 April, the company said on Tuesday.

The plant is owned by its subsidiary Sipchem Chemical Co.

“The company will announce the commercial operation, the financial impact and any further developments in due course,” Sipchem said in a statement on the Saudi bourse, Tadawul.

The PBT plant will get its main butanediol feedstock from another Sipchem affiliate, International Diol Co.

The total cost for the PBT project is about Saudi riyal (SR) 600m ($160m).

Sipchem owns 95% of the capital of Sipchem Chemical, with the remaining stake held by Sipchem Marketing Co.

PBT is a thermal highly specialised polymer which is used in automotive industry, electrical and electronic material production, as well as in the production of information-technology based materials that go into polymers manufacturing and plastics engineering.
