HOUSTON (ICIS)–Ford Motor Company has teamed with specialty materials company Corning to develop a lightweight and durable glass windshield for the new GT Supercar, the US carmaker announced on Tuesday.

According to Ford, the new Gorilla Glass hybrid window laminate is 25-50% thinner than traditional laminated windshields, and has equal to or greater strength than traditional laminate.

The glass uses of a multilayer approach of a pane of toughened automotive-grade formed hybrid as the inner layer, an advanced noise-absorbing thermoplastic interlayer in the centre, and an annealed glass outer layer.

The reduced weight of the windshield, engine cover and bulkhead glass on the Ford GT will assist in improving acceleration, fuel economy and braking performance, Ford said.

There are multiple other Gorilla Glass formulations currently used by more than 33 major consumer brands and featured on more than 1.5bn devices, Corning said on its website.

US-based Corning makes specialty glass and ceramics that are incorporated into various goods, including consumer electronics, telecommunications, mobile emissions control and life sciences.
