LONDON (ICIS)–Japanese passenger car sales fell by 4.38% in January year on year, according to data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) on Monday, as the country’s auto market continues to shrink.
Despite the headline falls in passenger car sales, sales of standard size vehicles saw a 22.71% rise in January year on year. Nevertheless, this was counterbalanced by falls in small and mini-class vehicles of 17.19% and 13.05% respectively.
Of the Japan majors, only Toyota, Lexus and Subaru saw
year-on-year sales growth in January 2016, and with Subaru’s
growth marginal at 0.24%.
Toyota saw a 5.21% growth in new passenger car sales year on
year in Japan, while Lexus achieved an impressive 35.92%
growth in sales, although they saw the lowest market share of
any of the majors – just 4.87% of the passenger car sales
volume of market leader Toyota.
Toyota sold almost double the number of passenger cars
compared to its closest rival, Honda, and accounted for
29.57% of total Japanese passenger car sales in
January.
