Japan plastic feedstocks production up 2.8% year on year in Dec 2015

TOKYO (ICIS)–Japan’s production of plastic feedstocks increased by 2.8% year on year in December 2015 to 906,100 tonnes, official industry data showed on Tuesday.

Among the total, production of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), however, fell by 13% to 17,217 tonnes from the same time a year earlier, according to the Japan Plastics Industry Federation (JPIF).

Output of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) declined by 15% to 51,061 tonnes from the previous year, while production of phenol resins decreased by 0.3% to 22,852 tonnes, the data showed.

However, output of polystyrene (PS) rose by 16% year on year to 111,399 tonnes, based on the statistics.

The country’s production of plastic products increased by 1.7% to 430,900 tonnes in December from the corresponding period a year earlier.

Among the total, output of film and sheet rose by 2.7% to 202,112 tonnes from the year earlier, but output of pipes decreased by 5.1% to 35,521 tonnes. Production of construction materials, however, increased by 0.6% year on year to 24,822 tonnes, the data showed.

Meanwhile, Japan’s exports of plastic feedstocks declined by 6.3% year on year to yen (Y)104.8bn in value, while exports of plastic products fell by 6.4% to Y122.5bn, according to JPIF.
