HOUSTON (ICIS)–Authorities declared a cautious “all clear” in Friday evening’s shooting attack at a mall in Munich, Germany, that left at least nine dead and 10 injured. A suspected lone gunman was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Earlier reports said authorities had declared a state of emergency and were searching for two to three suspects after a “possible terror attack” at the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall, near the site of the 1972 massacre of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists.
Later reports said that the motive in Friday’s attack remained unknown.
Global media reports in the developing story said police discovered a body 1 kilometre from the mall and there was the possibility that he could have been a gunman.
The city transit system has been closed and people were told to stay out of the area. Deutsche Bahn, the German rail carrier, also halted all traffic to Munich’s main station.
An official police spokesman told a German news agency that the attack began about 20:00 hours local time (16:00 GMT) at a McDonald’s fast food restaurant in the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall.
Friday’s shooting was the second attack in Germany this week. A teen wounded four people with a knife and ax aboard a train in the town of Wuerzburg. The four, and a woman attacked outside the train, survived. Authorities told the media that the teen likely acted alone.
