LONDON (ICIS)–The registration of commercial vehicles jumped 13% year on year between January and September, to total 1,717,237 units, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said on Friday.
Excluding buses and coaches, all subsectors within the commercial vehicle space posted double-digit gains during the period, indicating a recovery in the industrial sector which mainly purchases this type of vehicle.
In line with increased business confidence, consumers also contributed to the bonanza, with passenger car registrations rising 8% to 11,243,263 units.
Among the largest economies within the 28-strong EU bloc, Italy posted the biggest increase in commercial vehicle registrations between January and September, up 40.2% to 148,086 units.
Spain posted growth of 13.1% during the period with new vehicle registrations totalling 145,838 units.
Germany and France, the two largest economies within the 19-member eurozone, saw growth in new commercial vehicle registrations of 11.3% and 10.1% respectively at 264,790 and 339,471 units.
The UK notched up a year-on-year growth rate of 2% at 330,871 units during the 9-month period, but the latest monthly figures for September showed a month on month fall of 0.9% to 65,183 units.
France also posted a month on month decrease in September, down 1.1% to 40,090 units.
By subsector, the registration of new light commercial vehicles – those weighing of up to three-and-a-half tonnes – rose 13.5% to 1,422,657 units during the first nine months of 2016.
The registration of new heavy commercial vehicles – those over 16 tonnes – also posted a healthy increase, up 14.1% year on year, to 215,495 units.
A double-digit increase was also seen for new medium and heavy commercial vehicles – those over three-and-a-half but less than 16 tonnes – up 12.8% to 265,533 units.
The only subsector within the commercial vehicles space to post a modest increase was medium and heavy buses and coaches over three-and-a-half tonnes. It registered year on year growth of only 0.5% at 29,047 vehicles during the period.
