HOUSTON (ICIS)–The prime minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, formally resigned on Wednesday, hours after parliament passed a 2017 budget, according to the Italian government.

Renzi vowed to step down on 4 December after the country’s voters rejected his referendum proposals by 59.1%. However, President Sergio Mattarella convinced the PM to hold off until the pending budget was passed.

Mattarella will hold meetings with Italy’s political party leaders starting Thursday to determine what comes next: early elections or the selection of an interim leader from Italy’s bicameral parliament.

The results of the referendum are in line with global anti-establishment trends, including UK PM David Cameron’s resignation in July after the Brexit referendum and the results of the 2016 US presidential election.

Budget approved. Formal resignation at 19:00. Thanks to everyone and long live Italy.
