Ethylene Diamine

Ethylenediamine (EDA) (1,2-diaminoethane) commonly finds applications in the manufacture of bleach activators, fuel additives, corrosion inhibitors, and chelating agents. It is the lowest molecular weight member of the ethyleneamines family. It contains two primary amine groups and forms a maximum boiling azeotrope with water. EDA is used in agrochemicals in the production of fungicides, as a raw material in the production of ethylenebisstearmide (EBS) for plastic materials, and is consumed in a broad range of household and commercial detergents such as industrial tensides and soaps, additives and neutralizing agents.

General Information:

Assessment Window: Price assessments are based on information supplied by market participants through the week up to close of business on Fridays at 1800 hours in London.

Specifications: ICIS pricing quotes ethylene diamine with minimum purity of 99.5%.

Timing: Spot business is 30 days forward from the date of publication. Contract business is for loads delivered four-six weeks forward from the date of publication.

Terms: 30-60 days after bill of lading date.

Standard cargo size: Trucks typically carrying 20-25 tonnes.

Assessment basis: Around 80-90% of ethylene diamine business in Europe is done on contract basis. The spot market is normally illiquid.

The European market is dominated by five main producers. The sector is slightly in over capacity, although increasing Chinese demand is considered to assist in balancing the market. Prices react more significantly to supply and demand trends than to changes in feedstock values, and prices are consequently very stable. Various by-products – the ‘higher amines’ – are also produced alongside EDA, including DETA (diethylenetriamine), TETA (Triethylenetetramine), TEPA (tetraethylenepentamine) and others. Demand for the higher amines is stronger than for EDA.

The report offers market commentary that includes details of traced transactions, news on the supply/demand balance, export/import information, contract price negotiations and general sentiment for price direction. Where applicable there is product information, comments on up and downstream market developments and general market intelligence.
