Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) Production and Manufacturing Process

Search for Dimethyl terephthalate Suppliers

The traditional process to manufacture DMT utilises the esterification of terephthalic acid with methanol generated by catalytic homogeneous oxidation of paraxylene, developed partly because of the difficulty of purifying TPA produced by this process.

The most widely used technology is based on paraxylene using oxidation and esterification steps. Here, paraxylene in the liquid phase is oxidised by air in the presence of a cobalt salt catalyst to form an oxidate containing p-toluic acid and monomethyl terephthalate. Esterification is carried out in the presence of methanol to form DMT.

GTC has developed technology to upgrade existing DMT plants that is claimed to make them competitive with PTA facilities.
