The largest outlet for propylene glycol (PG) is unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) which are consumed primarily in the construction, marine and transportation industries. In the antifreeze sector, PG has replaced ethylene glycol in areas such as aircraft deicing fluids and as a coolant in the food industry.
Market growth in the US and Europe has been around 2%/year while Asia has seen higher growth at 6-7%/year. However, PG demand is linked to economic growth and markets have been impacted by the economic downturn. PG may see some substitution by glycerine in antifreeze and deicing applications.
Commercial production of propylene glycol is by hydration of propylene oxide. There is a lot of interest in producing PG from renewable resources such as glycerine.
Propylene glycol is a clear, colourless, odourless, hygroscopic, viscous liquid. It is relatively non-toxic but is a mild irritant and defatting agent. PG is combustible but not flammable at room temperature.

Uses and Outlook
The largest outlet for propylene glycol (PG) is unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) which are consumed primarily in the construction, marine and transportation industries. Nearly three-quarters of UPR is reinforced with fibre glass or mineral fillers to form fibre glass reinforced plastics (FRPs), which are tough, lightweight composites.
