A core priority for the company is to ensure that its growing range of candidate drugs (compounds with the potential to become new medicines) are developed effectively to meet the future needs of its patients.

 

However, the company will also continue to challenge all elements of its business to drive productivity and provide for the increased investment to support the achievement of its strategic objectives.

 

AstraZeneca states that it faces “some tough challenges” including the growing pressure on the price of its marketed products, higher costs and regulatory hurdles for the development of new products and a competitive marketplace, including challenges to its patents.

 

Astra-Zeneca with headquarters in London, UK, has sales of around $33bn and about 65,000 employees (2009).
