Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) operates in more than 60 countries around the globe. It is a major producer of therapies for cardiovascular, metabolic and infectious diseases, central nervous system and dermatological disorders, and cancer. It is also active in consumer medicines, orthopaedic devices, ostomy care, management, nutritional supplements, and infant formulas. The medicines business consists of worldwide pharmaceuticals and consumer medicines. Areas of interest include anti-cancer therapies, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and type II diabetes, HIV/Aids, depression, pain and anxiety.

 

History

 

The company was formed through a merger in 1989, which at that time was considered to be one of the largest in corporate history. In October 2001, BMS further strengthened its medicines business with the acquisition of DuPont Pharmaceuticals.

Today, it is a diversified worldwide health and personal care company whose core businesses are medicines, nutrition (Mead Johnson) and medical devices (ConvaTec).

On 1 September 2009, Bristol-Myers Squibb completed the acquisition of Medarex for $2.4bn.

 

Medarex will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb.
