DIC has four business segments: graphic arts materials; industrial materials; high performance and applied products; electronics and information materials.

 

Graphic arts materials

 

This segment encompasses DIC's core printing inks, printing supplies and organic pigments. DIC claims to be a global leader in these three product categories, giving it advantages in terms of scale and diversity.

 

Industrial materials

 

The industrial materials segment encompasses synthetic resins, synthetic resin-related products, and additives and chemicals. These products are supplied to customers in a variety of industries, including manufacturers of coatings, building materials, automobiles, electrical and electronic equipment, and textiles.

 

High performance and applied products

 

This segment includes special compounds and colourants, building materials, petrochemical-related products, chemical coatings, pressure sensitive adhesive materials and plastic moulded products. Customers come from a wide range of industries including housing construction, civil engineering, food and beverage packaging, and automobile manufacturing.

 

Electronics and information materials

 

Materials in this segment include imaging and reprographic products, liquid crystal materials and engineering plastics. Principal customers for these products are in high growth areas such as electrical and electronic equipment and IT.

 

Others

 

This segment includes operations that do not meet the criteria of the other segments such as the manufacture and sale of health foods and the operation of fitness clubs.

DIC (formerly known as Dainippon Ink and Chemicals) states that in fiscal year ended 31 March 2009 it continued to operate in a “harsh environment”, characterised by soaring prices for key raw materials in the first half and falling demand in key customer industries, triggering a sharp decline in shipments in the second half of the year.
