Honeywell is a diversified technology and manufacturing company. It serves customers worldwide with aerospace products and services, control technologies for buildings, home and industry, automotive products, power generation systems, speciality chemicals, fibres, plastics and electronic and advanced materials.

 

Honeywell is headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, US and has approximately 128,000 employees in nearly 100 countries.

 

History

 

The company was formed through the merger of two global companies, AlliedSignal and Honeywell Inc 1999. 


The company operates under four divisions:

  • Specialty Materials 
  • Aerospace Solutions
  • Automation & Control Power
  • Transportation Systems

Specialty Materials

 

The Specialty Materials claims to be a world leader in high-performance specialty materials, such as nylon, polyester, fluorocarbons, caprolactam and specialty and fine chemicals. Specialty Materials is segmented into several strategic business enterprises: Honeywell chemicals, Honeywell electronic materials, Honeywell nylon, performance products, research and life science solutions and UOP (a joint venture with Dow).

 

Honeywell Chemicals (includes fluorines, performance chemicals, industrial wax and commercial roofing systems)

 

Claimed by the company to be the world's largest producer of hydrofluoric acid and sulphur hexafluoride, the fluorine segment is also a leader in the refrigerants industry, manufacturing and supplying refrigerants. In the Americas and Asia, its refrigerant products are marketed under the trade name Genetron, whereas in Europe and the Middle East they are marketed under the Honeywell name. It has commercialised various foam-blowing agents, solvents and aerosols marketed under the Genesolv trade name. It also manufactures and supplies non-flammable ethylene oxide sterilant blends for use by healthcare manufacturers.

 

Under the performance chemicals segment, Honeywell claims it is a major manufacturer of various speciality intermediates and additives that are used for diverse industries including synthetic lubricants, paints, sealants, imaging, personal care and high technology. The industrial wax segment produces speciality paraffins, microcrystalline and fully formulated wax blends to serve the automotive, candle, coatings, food, packaging, tyre, rubber, wire and cable industries.


Commercial Roofing Systems is also part of Honeywell Chemicals. It is a single source supplier of roof systems for commercial, industrial and institutional facilities.


Honeywell Electronic Materials (HEM)


Produces deposition materials, wet process chemicals and thermal/electrical packaging solutions. HEM is also a developer and manufacturer of application-specific etchants and cleaning chemistries, including ultra-high purity straight and blended acids, solvents and bases marketed to the semiconductor, wafer manufacturer, microelectromechanical machines (MEMS), parts cleaning and mask-making businesses.


Honeywell Nylon


Includes carpet fibres, plastics and chemical intermediates. Anso nylon is its core brand. This family of fibres is found in residential, commercial, speciality and automotive carpet products.


Honeywell Plastics is one of the world's largest producers of nylon 6, offering a multitude of grades of Capron nylon 6 resin. Also makes PETRA PET engineering resin and recycled resins, as well as Aegis nanocomposite barrier resin. Plastics provides materials and technical support to clients that include the automotive, consumer/industrial, food and beverage packaging industries and applications.


Honeywell Chemical Intermediates offers an array of products, including merchant caprolactam, ammonium sulphate, cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, K/A oil, sulphuric acid and carbon dioxide. Additionally one of the world's largest manufacturers of ammonium sulphate fertiliser.


Performance Products


Global supplier of high strength and specialty fibres and solutions for a broad range of industrial, consumer and military uses. The specialty films division of this business is a leading supplier of ACLAR fluoropolymer film, as well as Oxyshield oxygen barrier co-extrusions. Speciality Films serves a number of industries including healthcare, food packaging, aerospace, electronics, industrial and specialty.


Honeywell Speciality Additives was the world's first commercial manufacturer of low molecular weight polyolefin polymers. Also produces the customised lubricant Rheochem, Lumilux pigments and A-C performance additives.


Research and Life Science Solutions


Targets life science markets and is expanding to research chemicals. Products include active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates, fluorine chemistry and high-purity solvents. Burdick & Jason is a provider of high purity solvents and reagents. It is used for semiconductor manufacturing as well as for a wide selection of analytical and biopharmaceutical applications.


Included in Specialty Materials is Honeywell's UOP joint venture with Dow. UOP licenses process technology to the petroleum and petrochemical industries.

Aerospace Solutions


Honeywell Aerospace Solutions claims to be the world's largest supplier of aircraft engines, equipment, systems and services for commercial transport, regional, general aviation and military aircraft.


Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Honeywell Aerospace manufactures auxiliary power units; turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft propulsion engines; marine propulsion and ground power systems; engine systems and accessories; commercial avionics, including enhanced ground proximity warning systems (EGPWS); flight control systems; environmental control systems; aircraft landing systems; power management and generation systems; and interior and exterior aircraft lighting.


Honeywell also provides repair and overhaul services; aerospace consumable spare parts, hardware and logistics support; and management and technical services for space and communications facilities.


Honeywell Aerospace connects across each of its businesses, serving a wide range of markets within the industry. Honeywell incorporates the needs of these markets into the design and delivery of all its products, services and integrated subsystems.


Comprising two key market segments, Honeywell works globally on behalf of customers in Commercial for the air transport, regional, business and general aviation markets, and in Defence & Space. These efforts include sales, marketing, market analysis and development, customer support, strategic development, as well as product and manufacturing interface within Honeywell.


Automation & Control Solutions


Honeywell's Automation & Control segment is comprised of three main business areas: Products, Building Solutions and Process Solutions.


Products provides controls for heating, cooling, indoor air quality, ventilation, humidification and home automation; advanced software applications for home/building control and industrial optimisation; sensors, switches, controls systems and instruments for measuring pressure, air flow, temperature, electrical current; burglar and fire detection products and distribution, access control and video surveillance systems.


Building Solutions installs, maintains and upgrades systems that keep workplaces safe, comfortable and productive, helping customers to be more competitive through improved building and process performance.


Process Solutions offers a full range of automation and control solutions to key vertical markets, including energy, pulp and paper, chemicals/pharmaceuticals, and industrial automation, and develops/markets industrial automation systems and advanced software applications.


Transportation & Power Systems


Transportation & Power Systems is comprised of three businesses: Garrett Engine Boosting Systems, Consumer Products Group and Friction Materials.


Garrett Engine Boosting Systems is a manufacturer of turbochargers and thermal systems for passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles.


Consumer Products Group manufactures and markets consumer-branded automotive products for the aftermarket consumer, as well as for automotive equipment manufacturers and installers, with household brand names including Prestone, Fram, Autolite and Holts.


Friction Materials is a global supplier of automotive brake friction materials and aftermarket brake products. Its key products include disc brake pads, drum brake linings and a variety of aftermarket brake products marketed under the Bendix brand name in North America and the Jurid brand name in Europe and Asia.
