Its future investments will remain high in order to ensure the long-term growth of the company through innovation. Research intensity (research spending divided by sales) should remain at more than 10% and at approximately 25% for its ethical business.

Within the chemicals business sector, Merck sees its prospects as looking very good in its high-grade liquid crystals business and believes it will continue to grow, thanks to the huge demand for specialised liquid crystal materials for PC monitors and large-format television screens, as well as the addition of colour filters to the product range.

Headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, Merck had sales of nearly Euro7.5bn in 2008 and around 32,800 employees (including Merck Serono) in 60 countries.

Merck KGaA Company Structure

Merck is a global pharmaceutical and chemical company. Merck's roots go back to the year 1668, when Friedrich Jacob Merck purchased the “Engel-Apotheke” (Angel Pharmacy) in Darmstadt, which has been in the possession of the family ever since. In 1816, Emanuel Merck took over the pharmacy. From these beginnings, he and his successors gradually built up a chemical-pharmaceutical factory that produced (in addition to raw materials for pharmaceutical preparations) a multitude of other fine chemicals, and ready-to-use medicines from 1904.
