Mosaic is a US-based producer of phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers, potash and animal feed products. Fertilizers manufactured include diammonium phosphate (DAP), triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash, ammonia, urea and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN).
Mosaic’s business is to improve crop yields and livestock nutrition through mining, manufacturing, marketing and distributing fertilizer worldwide. It offers three key fertilizer products - phosphate, potash and nitrogen - plus speciality products such as K-Mag and MicroEssentials S15.
History
Mosaic was created in October 2004 through the integration of the business and assets of the Cargill Crop Nutrition business units of privately held Cargill and with the business of IMC Global (IMC).
IMC Global dates back to 1909 when entrepreneur Thomas Meadows started in the phosphate mining business. In 1940 the company mined 50,000 tonne of potash from its Carlsbad, New Mexico plant.
It was a grain backhaul opportunity that launched Cargill Crop Nutrition in the 1960s. Product was needed to fill empty barges to make a profitable round-trip, so Cargill, already a leading agribusiness company, entered the fertilizer industry. From there the division grew to become one of the ‘world's top’ producers of phosphate and nitrogen fertilizer.
Company movements
On 1 October 2008, Mosaic and Investment Saskatchewan completed the sale of Saskferco Products to Yara International for approximately $1.6bn.
The sale was first announced in July 2008.
Operations
Mosaic maintains a global presence and has key distribution facilities in 11 countries, servicing customers in 33 countries around the world.
Its principal phosphate production facilities are located in Florida and Louisiana. These facilities also produce animal feed phosphates including monocalcium phosphate or monocal, dicalcium phosphate or dical, and industrial products such as fluorosilic acid.
Its potash production facilities are located in New Mexico, Michigan and Saskatchewan, Canada.
It also has equity interests in phosphate production facilities in the key growth markets of Brazil and China. Because of these facilities and production capabilities, Mosaic states that it maintains nearly 14% share of global phosphate capacity, while its global potash capacity share stands at approximately 15%.

Strategy & Financial Highlights
Mosaic states that fiscal year 2009 “tested” the company to a new level, due to the effects of the global economic crisis. This led to a sharp decline in US phosphate and potash use in fiscal 2009 and, as a consequence, reduced demand for Mosaic products.
