Orica is a publicly-owned Australian company employing around 15,000 people in around 50 countries and with annual sales of Aus$7bn. History

 

The business started in 1874 as a small explosives firm based in Victoria, Australia. The Orica name came into existence in February 1998 after trading under the ICI Australia banner for 70 years.

 

Orica Mining Services

 

Orica is a major supplier of commercial explosives and blasting services to the mining, quarrying and construction industries with manufacturing operations in 28 countries.

 

Orica Explosives includes initiating systems, ammonium nitrate, bulk explosives, packaged explosives and blasting services.

 

Orica Export Inc is responsible for the distribution of explosives and initiating systems to Central America and Panama, Caribbean, Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana and Suriname.

 

Orica Quarry Services offers a range of products and services to the quarry and construction markets around the world.

 

Incitec Industrial Chemicals is part of the Incitec business. It supplies a variety of chemicals used in the production of explosives, medical gases, water treatment and a range of acids used in the manufacturing and processing industries. Incitec Industrial Chemicals was integrated into mining services and chemicals after the merger between Incitec Fertilisers and Pivot.

 

Orica Consumer Products

 

In Australia and New Zealand, the consumer products business markets a wide range of products through well-known brand names such as Dulux, Berger, Levene, Cabot's, Selleys, Polyglaze, etc. Its principal businesses include:

 

Decorative Coatings claims to be Australasia's largest manufacturer and supplier of surface coatings. In offshore markets, Orica Coatings supplies a range of paints and specialist coatings.

 

Selleys manufactures and markets 'do-it-yourself' household cleaning and car care products under the Selleys, Polycell and Rota Cota brands.

 

Woodcare manufactures and markets a range of water-based wood stains, varnishes and timber finishes for both consumer and professional users.

 

Powder Coatings includes super durable powders and paints for architectural and industrial applications, as well as functional powders.

 

Incitec is 76.5% owned by Orica. It claims to be Australia's largest manufacturer of nitrogen-based chemicals and its business. It owns Incitec Fertilisers and Incitec Industrial Chemicals.

 

Incitec Fertilisers claims to be Australia's largest fertiliser manufacturer and supplier. The business is supported by distribution and customer service facilities in all its markets.

 

Crop Care Australasia is a supplier of phosphatic and nitrogenous fertiliser nutrients in eastern and southern Australia. Crop Care Australasia, which is a 50/50 joint venture between Incitec and Orica, is the leading supplier of a range of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to markets in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.

 

Incitec's heavy manufacturing operation has two ammonia plants in Brisbane and Newcastle (Kooragang Island) and superphosphate plant in Newcastle.

 

Orica Chemnet

 

Orica is a supplier of industrial and speciality chemicals in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. This division has recently developed an online shop front offering its customers access to safety data sheets, copy invoices, product specifications and on-line sales.

 

Orica Chemnet is an importer and distributor of chemicals in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. It also formulates proprietary cleaning chemicals for the food processing industry and has chemical warehouses, transport vehicles, bulk liquid and dry bulk chemical terminals.

 

Chemical Services

 

Chemical Services is a supplier of chemicals, services and technology to the water treatment, mining chemical and industrial chemical markets.  The business is based in Australia and has operations in the US and the UK. Chemical Services operates three separate business units:

 

Watercare products are used by municipal customers for creating safe drinking water and treating sewerage and by industrial customers in water and process applications.  Industrial markets include pulp and paper, food and beverage, dairy, steel, power generation and petrochemical. 

 

Specialty Chemicals is a producer of explosive emulsifiers and is also niche manufacturer of specialty surfactants, personal care additives, paint additives, pulp and paper dyes and agricultural chemicals. 

 

Mining Chemicals is based in Australia and exports products to Asia, Africa and the Americas, as well as supplying the local Australian industry.  It is claimed to be the world’s second largest producer of sodium cyanide and is extending into a range of related chemicals and services.

 

Minova

 

Minova provides specialist chemical products for underground mining and civil engineering activities.  These products include resin capsules, powders and injection chemicals for use in strata support, ground consolidation and ventilation systems.

The board's long term growth strategy of supporting and developing its business platforms has been underpinned by activities to improve its productivity and efficiency.
