Polimeri Europa | Company Structure Information from ICIS

Eni is the parent company of Polimeri Europa. It is an integrated energy company, operating in the oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals industries as well as oilfield services and engineering. It conducts operations in more than 70 countries where it employs 65,000 people (2008).

Its major production sites are located in Italy plus further sites in Europe and the rest of the world. Such products are used in several sectors, from tyres to packaging, automobiles, building, the electrical-electronic sector and household objects.

History

Eni, through Polimeri Europa, operates in the business of olefins and aromatics, basic intermediate products, chlorine derivatives, polystyrenes and elastomers.

Polimeri Europa started in 1995 as a 50:50 joint venture between EniChem and Dow (Union Carbide) for the manufacture of polyethylene at plants in Italy, France and Germany. In 2001, EniChem sold its polyurethane business to Dow and purchased the remaining 50% stake in Polimeri Europa from Dow.

The Eni group was founded in 1953.

Polimeri Europa is divided into four divisions:

Basic Chemicals

These products are earmarked primarily for resale and are utilised as intermediates and monomers for plastics, resins, fibres and elastomers, as well as intermediates for the secondary and fine chemicals industries. Some are used in their original state as solvents.

These products are a result of the tight integration with Eni's refinery operations. Eni is Polimeri Europa's primary supplier of petroleum raw materials, supplying about two thirds of its requirements. They account for virtually all of the fundamental raw materials required in the downstream production of intermediates, polymers and elastomers.

The production units are located in Italy in Priolo, Gela, Porto Torres (EniChem plant), Porto Marghera, Brindisi, Ravenna, Mantua and Sarroch, and in France in Dunkirk.

Polyethylene

Polimeri Europa is one of the main European producers of polyethylenes.

Styrenics

The production sites are located at Italy, Belgium and Hungary. Downstream the compounding unit of Italy produces polymers and polymer alloys to meet the most sophisticated performance and colour requirements.

Elastomers

Polimeri Europa is one of the world's major producers of synthetic elastomers and lattices. Rubber and lattice production plants are located in Italy at Ravenna, Ferrara and Porto Torres (EniChem plant), in the UK at Hythe and Grangemouth, in France at Champagnier and in the US at Baytown (Texas).
