The Royal Dutch/Shell group of companies is involved in the exploration and production of oil, gas and other energy sources, petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacture.
In Shell’s chemicals business there are six business areas: base chemicals; styrene monomer/propylene oxide and derivatives; ethylene oxide/ethylene glycols; solvents/phenol; higher olefins and derivatives; and propanediol/polytrimethylene terephthalate.
Downstream, the company is making selective growth investments, after a period dominated by disposals. Competitive cost performance and operational excellence are embedded in its strategy.
Shell states that meeting growing global demand for energy in ways that minimise the effect on the environment is a key challenge for its future business. It is pursuing a range of opportunities to develop alternative energy that will both complement today’s core businesses and establish major new income streams over the long term.
Shell sees ‘great potential in unconventional hydrocarbons’ such as oil sands and gas-to-liquids. These ‘unconventionals’, and Shell’s technology, are believed will help the company drive full replacement of its production, on both a resources and reserves basis, and sustain long term production growth.
