Teijin is a Japanese-based technology-driven group operating in the main fields of synthetic fibres, films and plastics, pharmaceuticals and home health care, trading and retail, and IT and new products.
Teijin aims to attain “global excellence” by evolving its business structure and strengthening profitability. Principal growth drivers are chemical technology and biotechnology-derived high-performance materials, and business solutions in the field of specialty health care.
Teijin has framed its management vision around the goals of attaining global excellence, fostering sustainable growth in global markets by building on its core competencies, and accelerate growth through the cultivation of new businesses.
The company will shift its focus to four high-growth, high-margin fields – automobiles and aircraft, information and electronics, health care, and environment and energy – that are compatible with its technologies as well as its ability to develop new applications. It will promote R&D strategies that will enable the cultivation of new businesses.
Teijin has 18,778 employees with head offices in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, and had sales of Y766bn in the fiscal year to 31 March 2010.

Strategy & Financial Highlights
Teijin states that the deterioration of global economic conditions triggered by the financial crisis originating in the US prompted a sharp downturn in the automotive, electronics and other major markets of Teijin. This precipitated a steep decline in demand in its materials businesses, which substantially eroded consolidated net sales and operating income in its Synthetic Fibres and Films and Plastics segments.
