Production of acetone was impacted at the start of the quarter due to a number of force majeures and production outages at European sites. That said, due to healthy inventory levels, these stoppages did not cause tight conditions in the European market. Since European production stabilised around the mid-quarter supply has been said to be increasing in Europe, particularly in December when buying interest also tailed off.
Demand at the start of the fourth quarter was fairly healthy. Some players suggested that buying interest was boosted by the production issues earlier in the quarter, as some buyers sought to replenish lost volumes. But with inventories already considered to be quite high ahead of the quarter, the impact of the multiple force majeures in the region was not as pronounced as it could have been. In line with typical seasonal trends, demand was said to have softened towards the end of the quarter as players commenced destocking activities ahead of the year-end.
The ICIS acetone report in Europe shows a monthly methyl methacrylate (MMA) acetone contract price, which is agreed by major producers and consumers.
The report covers movements in the spot market, which are largely based on the seller to end-user price for the solvents market.
The prices are formulated following extensive conversations with buyers, sellers, distributors and traders across the continent.
A Russian spot price is quoted in the report, and a summary of price developments and trade flows in the UK.
The report also has extensive coverage of planned and unplanned production issues across Europe.
The acetone report is widely used by the industry as a benchmark for contract business and spot activity.
