Updated to Q1 2017
Asia's spot benzene prices were generally higher in the first quarter, as prices were supported by low tank inventories and tight supply in China.
Bullish sentiment in the trading arena was largely due to positive spot appetite in China caused by low shore tank inventories in China and delays in regional and deep sea cargoes, while styrene monomer (SM) prices remained firm, resulting in strong prompt buying activities in the Chinese domestic market. Shore tank inventories in Jiangsu region fell to its lowest in end December at 30,500 tonnes before slowly recovering to 61,500 tonnes in end February. Increases in US benzene prices also led traders to cover their short positions on concerns that prices will continue to climb.
Spot benzene prices peaked at an average of $1,070/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in mid-February. Imports into China were at 231,404 tonnes in January.
However, towards the second half of the quarter, weakness in prices was brought about by sharp decrease in SM prices, sudden outages in benzene downstream units and well-balanced end-user inventories on earlier imports.
