Updated to Q2 2017
Spot benzene prices in the second quarter were generally weaker, amid a largely closed US arbitrage window and concentrated downstream turnarounds from April through June.
Spot FOB Korea benzene prices peaked at $855/tonne FOB Korea in early April and were lowest at $702.50/tonne in early May. Prices were put under pressure due to a slump in styrene monomer (SM) prices, squeezing SM producer margins and China shore tank inventories were battling with high inventories of SM at the same time. There was a supply glut in May with benzene traders holding onto May cargoes moving into late April due to weak China demand. China demand was weak as there were ongoing turnarounds at major SM plants in China and other downstream caprolactam players also adjusted down operating rates with spreads narrowing quickly. Some April cargoes from Korea were moved to Japan because of heavy benzene turnarounds which tightened supply availability. However, because the Asia-US arbitrage window was unexpectedly closed for a prolonged period of time amid delays in restart of US SM units, the buildup in spot cargoes in the market was hard to relieve, resulting in weakness in FOB Korea prices.
In early April, India’s Reliance Industry Limited started up its 500,000 tonne/year benzene plant and started to export cargoes in mid-April, according to market players. The impact on the market was deemed well-managed by the players, with cargoes equitably allocated to the three regions without causing huge downward pressure on prices amid weak fundamentals and an uncertain market outlook.
