Updated to Q1 2017
Asia BPA spot prices continued on an uptrend in the first quarter of 2017, on the back of tighter supply and higher raw material values in January and February. However, prices came under pressure in March amid a slowdown in downstream consumption and a slump in feedstock prices.
Tightness in supply was felt in the market as some BPA suppliers were undergoing maintenance in the first quarter and were limiting spot sales volumes.
The improved performance in the major downstream polycarbonate (PC) market also helped bolstered sentiment. However, the gains were capped from February onwards as sales in the secondary downstream epoxy resin sector started to slow down.
BPA weekly spot average prices were around $1,245/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in early January and climbed to a high of around $1,388/tonne CFR China by early February. Prices subseqeuntly fell to $1,275/tonne CFR China by mid-March.
