Bisphenol-A (BPA) prices rose in July as the higher cost of feedstock phenol and tight supply in the spot market encouraged cargo-holders to raise their offers. However, worries about poor end-product sales saw downstream producers mainly purchase hand-to-mouth, which resulted in a muted overall tone to negotiations. By the end of the month, BPA prices were trading at CNY8,800/tonne.
Prices continued to rise in August as higher phenol costs and falling spot supply due to some plant turnarounds prompted producers to hold back on sales and raise their offers. As the availability of lower prices tightened, some end-users were prepared to make purchases, but many remained resistant to the higher prices.
BPA prices fluctuated slightly in the first half of September. Producers firmed their offers due to higher phenol costs, but market sentiment was hurt by weak downstream buying due to the G20 summit in Huangzhou. A few lower prices were heard in the market. Following the end of the summit, buying interest gathered steam in response to increased run rates in the downstream industries. End-users, however, remained cautious about their purchasing decisions and spot deals were limited.
