Updated to Q1 2017
European bisphenol A (BPA) prices have risen throughout the first quarter, with upstream pricing developments and downstream demand and availability combining to drive prices higher.
Rising BPA prices in Asia at the end of 2016 and the strength of the US dollar against the euro negatively impacted on the competitiveness of Asian imports in the European market, and this, in turn, has led to a reduction of Asian BPA in the first quarter. In addition, market participants noted that strong downstream demand prompted some European integrated producers to look at using their BPA internally, limiting availability on the spot market.
Strong demand from both the epoxy resins and polycarbonate markets has been exacerbated by European buyers focusing more on local material after Asian price hikes.
However, rising upstream prices in Europe have led to firming contract and spot prices throughout the first three months of 2017, with the tightening supply and demand dynamics in Europe strengthening this trend as the quarter progressed.
