Updated to Q4 2017
Butadiene (BD) supply increased due to additional capacity in China. Several new BD units in China started up in the fourth quarter of 2017, adding fresh supply to the Chinese domestic market and freeing up surplus BD stocks to the export market. The additional Chinese BD supply weighed on demand for BD imports and capped the BD price uptrend towards the end of 2017.
Demand remained relatively stable. Most of the major downstream synthetic rubber producers had already covered their January requirements and were not pressured to procure additional spot volumes towards the end of the year. Spot prices of BD increased by about 20% since early November, but started to flatten out by the end of 2017 because the new BD units in China had started commercial production.
