Updated to Q1 2018
Caprolactam (capro) supply was tight for most of Q1 due to pre-Lunar New Year stock building activity. Buyers had expected the break to result in a reduction of supply due to shutdowns in China and Taiwan, and made sure that they were well stocked before the holiday. However, as most producers had sold out of stock through their contracts, spot availability was tight even after the markets re-opened. This resulted in price hikes that lasted through the second half of Q1.
Demand was initially weak with buyers covered until the Lunar New Year break in mid-February. Following the break and with inventories starting to deplete, demand started to firm up. However, due to stronger caprolactam (capro) values and slower downstream activity, the cost sensitive nylon makers avoided making stock-building purchases to manage costs and protect margins.
