Updated to Q1 2017
Asia’s spot caprolactam (capro) prices started the first quarter of 2017 at $1,925/tonne CFR (cost & freight) northeast (NE) Asia and reached a high of $2,320/tonne CFR NE Asia in early March.
Capro prices largely extended their uptrend, which started in November 2016, on the back of a corresponding increase in upstream benzene values. Curtailed operating rates due to a shortage and high costs of upstream cyclohexanone over the same period also played a part in bolstering spot capro prices in the region.
March caprolactam contract prices settled $130/tonne higher than February, taking the contract price to its highest since October 2014.
Towards the end of the first quarter, however, spot capro prices started to be weighed down by steep declines in upstream benzene, an easing of the tightness in upstream cyclohexanone supply as well as stagnation in downstream nylon markets.
In China, the start-up of a 200,000 tonne/year capro plant in Shanxi may also lengthen domestic supply.
