Updated to Q2 2018
Caustic soda supply in Latin America during the second quarter of 2018 remained in balance with steady demand from major consuming sectors, such as paper/pulp and soaps/detergents. Braskem’s chlor-alkali facility in Maceio, Brazil resumed operation in mid-March following an unexpected shutdown on 15 January, normalising availability in the Americas. US caustic soda volumes had to find other destinations when supply lengthened as major alumina refiner Alunorte in Brazil reduced operation rates by 50%.
Caustic soda demand during the second quarter of 2018 was steady from key consuming sectors paper/pulp and soaps/detergents. However, demand for US caustic soda from the alumina industry fell when Brazil’s alumina refiner Alunorte’s production dropped by 50% in the second half of the first quarter. This came after regional authorities questioned the company about environmental issues. Alunorte continued consuming at 50% of normal rates during the second quarter. Demand in Mexico from soaps/detergents was gauged as stable.
