In the China market, a key domestic producer was running its plant at 50% capacity. As a result, the supply of domestic cargoes was limited. Elsewhere, the supply of spot import cargoes was also tight as producers either channelled their volumes to their own captive epoxy resins facilities or catered to domestic demand. Some ECH producers preferred to divert their cargoes into markets further afield such as the US and Europe amid better netbacks.
Buyers in China that were not been active in the spot import market made enquiries about cargoes amid tight domestic supply. However, few of these enquiries materialised into deals as spot import prices increased in tandem with domestic offers. Some buyers saw no need to procure cargoes during the quarter as they sat on comfortable inventories and shut their epoxy resins plants in February for the Lunar New Year holiday.
