Updated to Q2 2018
Ethyl acetate (ETAC) was balanced for much of the second quarter, but tightened significantly during June from a combination of limited imports from Asia, peak seasonal demand and INEOS beginning a maintenance turnaround at its Hull, UK plant. The plant is the largest producer of ETAC in Europe, and has been expected to undergo a turnaround this year in order to finalise a previously announced expansion. A market source also said that INEOS was not offering material to the spot market in late June.
The second quarter is typically a period of peak demand for ETAC, driven by demand from the downstream coatings sector. However, mixed views of demand were given in April, with a producer saying that this seasonal demand had been delayed by a longer than usual winter. Demand was also affected in the first half of May by a high number of public holidays. This peak demand arrived in June, contributing to the tightening of supply that occurred during this month.
