Ethylbenzene: Market overview
Updated to Q2 2017
European ethylbenzene values are likely to come under pressure in the second quarter, with styrene spot prices lower into April. Various units in the US are expecting to come back on line in April and another in May, which will add more supply to the global market. Benzene prices will also face some upwards pressure as the quarter unfolds, with lighter feedstocks out of crackers limiting European production. Downstream styrenics consumption should be healthier as the peak summer season draws closer.
In the US, ethylbenzene prices are expected to begin the second quarter on a downtrend after spiking during the first amid tight markets for upstream benzene and downstream styrene. While falling prices for benzene and styrene are expected to continue pressuring ethylbenzene values lower as the second quarter begins, supply tightening for benzene or increased demand for styrene could move prices higher in the second half of the quarter.

Ethyl Benzene Methodology
Ethylbenzene (EB) is a colourless liquid, with a pungent aromatic odour. It is practically insoluble in water but soluble in ethyl alcohol, ether and benzene.
Nearly all EB output is used in the production of styrene monomer, which is then used in many homopolymer, copolymer and terpolymer applications. These applications cover a wide scope of industrial, consumer and medical products.
Ethylbenzene is also used in the production of synthetic rubber, as a component of automotive and aviation fuels and in the manufacture of cellulose acetate. It is utilised as a solvent or diluent for alkyd surface coatings, and as a chemical intermediate for diethylbenzene and acetophenone, ethyl anthraquinone, EB sulphonic acids, and alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol.
