Updated to Q1 2017
US ethylbenzene prices moved sharply higher during the first quarter as costs for upstream benzene and prices for downstream styrene rose. Values began the year in the low 40 cents/lb, but reached into the high 50 cents/lb by the end of the quarter. Early in the quarter, upstream benzene values had been pushed higher, largely due to limited imports from Asia. The US benzene market is structurally short and relies on imports to meet consumption levels and a large share of those imports are shipped from Asia.
Styrene prices tracked gains in benzene early in the quarter and supported the higher ethylbenzene values. However, as production issues arose in the styrene sector, the increase in ethylbenzene values slowed amid lower benzene costs.
