Ethylene glycol China Transcript
The Mono Ethylene Glycol or MEG China report is published weekly and is used extensively as a global reference.
Key price quotes are domestic cost & freight (CFR) China main port (CMP) and ex-tank China. Due to the volatile nature of the MEG markets we are in close contact with MEG producers, traders, brokers and end users to track accurate information throughout the week.
This includes bids, offers and deals. The report captures the unit operation performance and MEG and polyester products, inventories, from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) factories mainly in the east and south China. MEG inventories held in tank farms are also obtained through our network of contacts in this area.
We have reported on the China MEG market for about 10 years and we have established a wide contact base of producers, buyers and traders in the market that is not openly transparent.
Our published prices are also used as benchmark prices for contract negotiations.

Monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices in east China increased during the quarter. Domestic prices increased significantly in October, tracking higher prices on the Huaxicun Commidity Contracts Exchanged, which rose on the back of higher crude oil futures prices after the National Day holiday. Prices increased further as the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) officially offered a preliminary approval to Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) for ethylene glycol (EG) futures. However, the uncertain macroeconomy exerted downward pressure on the market sentiment, and market participants were cautiously optimistic. The price uptrend continued into November, as prices on the Huaxicun increased on the back of the bullish commodity market, reaching a record high for the year. Low inventories also supported prices. Later in the month, commodity prices dropped on pressure from efforts by regulatory authorities and commodity exchanges to curtail speculation. Although no significant unfavourable factors shifted fundamentals, decreasing prices onn Huaxicun and profit-taking activities made market participants retreat to the sidelines. However, the unexpected shutdown at some units had limited impact on the fundamentals and prices fluctuated slightly. In early December, price increased on tight supply and strong demand, as market sentiment improved. Commodity futures rose and as prices on the Huaxicun picked up, domestic prices followed.
