Heading into the third quarter, US downstream demand is expected to be strong for the next couple of months. Summer is the peak season for the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) market, and PET demand is expected to pick up due to increased bottled beverage consumption. Ethylene oxide (EO) supply is expected to be slightly tighter starting in August as a producer is planning to conduct a maintenance turnaround at its plant, which should last two months. US EO contracts will continue to track movements in the upstream ethylene contract.
European EO supply was very tight during Q2 due to several turnarounds. Buyers expect availability to improve as the market reaches the tail end of the turnaround season. Downstream EO derivative demand was healthy in Q2, and it remains to be seen if this will continue into Q3. EO formula contract prices will continue to track upstream ethylene monthly pricing movements.

About Ethylene oxide
Ethylene oxide (EO) is the simplest cyclic ether and is a highly reactive, colourless gas due to the strain in its ring structure. It decomposes on heating above 500oC and may polymerise due to heating, under the influence of acids, bases, metal chlorides and metal oxides.
EO is used primarily in the production of monoethylene glycol (MEG) which is used mainly in the production of polyesters and antifreeze.
Other EO derivatives include ethoxylates (used in shampoo), ethanolamines (used in surfactants, personal care products), glycol ethers (used in solvents and fuels), polyethylene glycols (used in toothpaste) and polyalkylene glycols (used in antifoam agents).
