Updated to Q4 2016
Europe ethylene oxide (EO) October formula contracts increased from September, then increased again in November and decreased in December. These agreements followed confirmed upstream ethylene contract settlements, and are according to ICIS calculations. The EO industry typically takes 80-85% of the ethylene price movement, while ICIS uses an average of 82% in its calculations.
The shutdown EO season, which continued into the third quarter, came to a close in the fourth quarter. Supply and demand conditions were seen as balanced to slightly tight through the quarter.
At the end of November and into December, players' attentions were largely turned to negotiating adder levels for 2017. Some customers along the chain said that sellers would be justified in seeking an increase for next year, based on factors such as higher energy and labour costs. Others disagreed, partly due to the disappointing demand in certain applications.
