Updated to Q4 2017
EPDM supply in the fourth quarter of 2017 increased compared with Q3 after two major Chinese producers restarted their units from maintenance, which weighed on the market sentiment. Regional suppliers were not keen to drop prices too much given the firm feedstock cost and some of them even targeted higher prices to recoup margins. Moreover, new capacities did not come on stream as scheduled. Commercial operations at the joint-venture plant between South Korea’s Lotte and Italian’s Versalis was heard to be delayed to early 2018.
EPDM demand in Q4 was largely stable. Most buyers and end-users were purchasing cargoes on a need-to basis and were not keen to build inventory given ample supply. The demand in China was higher than other regions amid strong vehicles sales, which lent some support to the EPDM market.
