Hydrochloric acid: Market overview
Updated to Q4 2018
Supply in the European hydrochloric acid (HCl) market is expected to be stable or increase in Q4. Covestro’s long-running force majeure at its plant in Spain, which is logistics related, may come to an end in Q4 although an exact date is unclear. The tight trucking market is expected to continue in Q4, with sources anticipating price increases to cover the higher costs.
Demand in the European hydrochloric acid (HCl) market is expected to fall in late Q4 due to the Christmas holiday season and a general slowing of business activity. The most recent PMI data shows a fall in confidence among European manufacturing players as a result of escalating concerns about global trade.
Maintenances at two large producers of acid as a by-product of isocyanate production will likely crimp supply near the end of October and into November.
Demand is expected to hold steady with oil prices bumping up against $70/bbl. If prices move into the $70s/bbl for crude oil, oilfield activity can be expected to increase sharply.

Hydrochloric Acid Methodology
About Hydrochloric acid
Hydrochloric acid can be manufactured by direct synthesis where hydrogen and chlorine are reacted in a burner to produce hydrogen chloride. However, much hydrochloric acid is produced as a by-product of other processes such as vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), chlorinated methanes and ethanes, and fluorocarbons.
Applications for hydrochloric acid include steel manufacture where is used as a pickling agent, food manufacture in the canning process, and brick cleaning and concrete etching. It is also used in pulp and paper, chemical and water treatment, the electronics industry and pharmaceuticals. Domestic uses include many household cleaning products.
Hydrochloric acid presents a number of hazards as it is corrosive and can cause serious burns to skin and eyes. Personal protective equipment should always be worn when handling hydrochloric acid.
